Ice hockey scrimmage

An open in-house league on Holt Blvd. Basic hockey skills for the first 30 minutes, then scrimmage.

Skills for 30 minutes, then the game

The ice hockey scrimmage is an open in-house league, and the rink describes it as a class and an instructional game in one. All participants learn basic hockey skills for the first 30 minutes, followed by the scrimmage itself. The skills block comes first so the game that follows is played by kids who have just practiced the habits it asks for.

Beginner hockey skills tend to come back to the same few things: knees bent, head up, stick on the ice, and a stop that works every time. A clean stop matters more than speed, because a player who can stop can play close to other people. Those basics are what the first half hour is for, and the scrimmage is where they get tried at game pace.

Session times change, so call 909-986-0793 or text 909-935-9023 to confirm the night before you drive over. Ask the front desk what to bring for your first night on the ice; the rink’s staff will know better than any list we could write here.

Which night is yours, by age?

Two youth groups skate on two different nights. Players 7 to 12 years old skate on Monday from 5:00-6:00 pm. Players 3 to 7 years old skate on Thursday from 6:00 to 7:10 pm. Either way, the league costs $75.00 per month. A seven-year-old fits both groups on paper, so ask the front desk which night suits your family better.

Every group asks for one thing first: Completed Hockey One. Hockey 1 is the rink’s own class, and the class board runs it on Tuesday at 6:30 pm and on Thursday at 6:30 pm. Finish it, and the scrimmage league is open to the player. That order means nobody is thrown into a game before they can stop and turn.

Skating classes start at the beginning of each month and students can sign up at any time, so a player can begin Hockey 1 now and move to the scrimmage nights when it is done. The class and the league run side by side on the same ice, and the front desk can walk you through the order.

Adults on the ice, and who came up through here

Adults are not left out. The adult scrimmage is by appointment, so text 909-935-9023 to set it up. The ice is Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 to 10:00 am, a morning slot rather than an evening one, which is worth knowing if your own work week leaves the evenings full.

The rink’s own history page says Ontario’s youth hockey has created an untouchable legacy, and it lists players who came through the building: Noach Clarke of La Verne, a Los Angeles Kings draft pick; Torrey Di Roberto of Upland, an Anaheim Duck; and Kyle Bigos of Upland, an Edmonton Oilers draft pick.

A Monday scrimmage for kids is a modest thing next to those names, but it is the same ice, under the same barrel-vault roof, at the same address on Holt Blvd. Every league has to start with a first night and a first stop, and the first half hour of skills is where that happens here.

Requirement for the league: Completed Hockey One. Youth nights are Monday and Thursday, adults by appointment. Call 909-986-0793 or text 909-935-9023 to confirm this month’s times.

Three groups, three different nights. Players new to the game start in the hockey classes, and anyone who wants the same sport in sneakers can look at broomball.
