Learn to Skate
Thirty-minute classes once a week on the Holt Blvd ice, for Tots ages 3 to 5 and Pre-Alpha ages 6 to 16. Skate rental is included the day of class.
Which class does my child start in?
Learn to Skate splits by age, and you pick one when you sign up. Tots is for ages 3 to 5. Pre-Alpha is for ages 6 to 16, so a nine-year-old and a fourteen-year-old who have never stood on ice start in the same place. A child who has never skated simply begins at the beginning of whichever class matches their age.
Tots meets Monday at 5:30 PM, Thursday at 6:00 PM and Saturday at 12:45 PM. Pre-Alpha meets Monday at 5:30 PM, Tuesday at 6:30 PM, Thursday at 6:30 PM and Saturday at 12:45 PM. Monday and Saturday list both classes at the same hour, so brothers and sisters of different ages can come in one trip. How does the month work?
Classes start at the beginning of each month, but students may sign up at any time, so there is no need to wait for the first of the month to get a child on the ice. Each class is 30 minutes, once a week, and skate rental is included the day of your class. That means no skates to buy before you know whether your child wants to keep going.
New students pay $70.00 for the first month. Continuing students pay $60.00. A short class once a week suits small legs: 30 minutes is long enough to learn something and short enough that a five-year-old is still smiling at the end. Bring gloves and send your child in long pants and thick socks, because the ice is cold and so are the falls.
What happens in a first class?
Most first lessons on any rink begin with the same three things: how to fall, how to get back up, and how to march in place with flat feet before anyone tries to glide. Falling on purpose, onto the side and not the wrist, takes the fear out of the ice faster than any amount of reassurance from the boards.

When a few months of Pre-Alpha have gone by, the full class board shows Hockey 1 and the adult class alongside it. If a birthday is coming up, the party package includes a 20-minute lesson on the ice.
